March is Pet Nutrition Month Nutrition can be a confusing topic for pet owners. Unfortunately, owners assume that the same principles that work in human nutrition also always work in dogs and cats. Good nutrition is no accident. It takes time and patience to learn what your pet needs to stay healthy, happy and active. It also takes dedication and perseverance to make sure your pet eats what it should, rather than what it wants. It's vital that your pet eats a complete and balanced diet with the proper amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. Human food or table scraps are too fatty for your pet's digestive system. They can cause vomiting, diarrhea or, over a period of time, obesity and other health conditions. Stay away from feeding raw meat. Some people claim that pets need raw meat because they are natural hunters. However there too many concerns about the bacteria and parasites present. It is best to avoid it all together. You are what you eat! And the same applies to your pet. Pets that eat an appropriate balanced diet, are less likely to develop certain ailments or diseases such as skin allergies, heart disease and diabetes. A good quality diet like Iams, Eukanuba and Hill's Science Diets provide the necessary proteins, fats and carbohydrates for energy; minerals for nerve conduction and muscle contraction. Though these diets may be pricier, their exceptional quality is a great benefit to your pet’s health. Supermarkets only stock food that sells the most rather than the healthiest pet food. It's up to you to know what brands are the best. Also, unlike supermarket foods, which consist of 60% carbohydrates, a better diet can help manage your pet’s weight. A good quality food allows you to feed smaller, more nutritional portions and avoid excess calories. Ready to start your pet’s new diet for a better and healthier life? At your next visit ask us about a free sample of Hill’s Science diet or Eukanuba. Did you know that Hill's Science Diet is a proud partner of (HSUS) The Humane Society of the United States - providing premium pet food to help the shelters' temporary residents. Ensure that you pet eats what is should and not what it wants.
Second Hand Smoke In June, when the U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona called secondhand smoke “a serious health hazard”, he was talking about humans. But the warning also applies to pets. Dogs who live with smokers face double the risk of developing lung, nasal or sinus cancers than those who live in smoke-free homes. And cats exposed to smoke are more likely to develop malignant lymphoma or oral cancers. To reduce your pet’s exposure: Smoke outside, or open windows and use fans. Even better quit this unhealthy habit.
