May is Flea & Tick Prevention Month

Pet owners know that every time spring and summer roll around, fleas and ticks launch a full out attack on dogs, cats AND people!  Besides driving our faithful companions (and us) crazy, these pesky pests also pose a hazard by transmitting tapeworms and even Lyme disease.  And if illnesses weren't bad enough, many pets are allergic to fleas!

Watching flea-bitten pets scratch themselves desperately is a heart-breaking sight.  Though the itching component to flea-allergy can be treated with (prescribed) antihistamines or even corticosteriods, the best approach is to kill the fleas and ticks BEFORE they can bite your pet. None of the products that you buy over the counter can do this.

To successfully combat fleas and ticks remember to

treat ALL indoor and outdoor pets in your household every 3 to 4 weeks.

To help win the battle against fleas and ticks, we offer these products that

are safe, easy to use and highly effective in killing these pests.

Vectra 3D (dogs only) A once-a-month topical skin treatment that kills and repels fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for at least a month. It is safe for puppies over 7 weeks of age. This product is water-proof and remains effective after bathing and swimming.  It kills 96% of fleas in 6 hours and repels/kills ticks that may cause Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever.

Frontline Plus (dogs and cats)  Frontline® Plus provides long-lasting, effective control of fleas and ticks on your pet: It kills up to 100% of existing fleas in less than 24 hours and continues killing fleas for an entire month or more. It remains waterproof for 30 days, even if your pet swims or is bathed. It is gentle enough for use on puppies & kittens 8 weeks of age and on pregnant or nursing mothers. Frontline not only kills adult fleas, but also breaks the flea life cycle by killing their eggs and larvae, preventing re-infestation.

Revolution (cats) Once a month topical medication effective against adult fleas for 30 days, as well as flea eggs. It is also effective in preventing heartworm disease when used monthly. It can be used to treat ear mite infestations, sarcoptic mange, ticks as well as roundworm and hookworm infections. It is water-proof and fast acting (within 2 hours of treatment) also safe for kittens (over 6 wks), pregnant and nursing mothers.

Capstar (dogs and cats) - Oral tablets for the treatment of flea infestation on dogs, puppies, cats and kittens 4 weeks of age or older and 2 lbs or greater body weight. It is a amazingly fast acting and begins to kill fleas within 30 minutes. A single dose should kill the adult fleas on dogs within 4 hrs and within 6 hrs on cats. Safe for use in pregnant or nursing mothers. May be used as needed, as often as once per day.

                                                            Health Calendar

Keep your pet healthy and safe all year round.

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a big difference

in protecting pets and maintaining their health.

JANUARY - Beware of winter hazards!

  • If it’s bitter cold, don’t leave your pet in the car or outside for long periods. A “fur” coat may not be enough!
  • Clean up antifreeze spills right away. Pets are attracted to the sweet taste and

even two licks will cause kidney failure and death if not treated immediately.

  • Just as you wipe your feet when you come in, clean off your pet’s paws too.

Rock salt, ice clumps and rocks can cause discomfort.

  • Watch for wagging tails that may get too close to hot fireplaces and burning candles.

FEBRUARY-  Out with Bad Breath!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Without regular cleaning and treatment, built-up plaque and tarter can damage your pet’s gums and teeth then lead to heart and kidney problems. We routinely give discounts for ultrasonic cleaning and polishing during this month. Call to schedule a routine dental exam, and we can show you how to take care of your pet’s teeth with brushing, special diets, rinses, chew toys and other easy aids.

MARCH - Spring spruce-up time!

  • Freshen up! Just as you like to step out in style for spring, how about some pampering for your favorite pal too.

Schedule a grooming to trim, clip and wash away the winter grime.

  • Go shopping! Out with the old, dirty outdoor toys and in with some new, clean, fun toys.

APRIL - Chocolate & candy are a pet no no!

Watch out for the sweets…candies made with the artificial sweetener, xylitol, and chocolate can be toxic, even deadly,

for your pet. Lock up the sweet stuff and keep some healthy, doggie friendly snacks on hand instead.

MAY - Fitness for life - control your pets' weight!

They may be cute and cuddly, but obese pets have shorter lives (just like humans). Sometimes a significant weight

gain can indicate other medical problems. Added weight causes joint, bone, respiratory and heart problems. With the

proper diet and exercise, we can help your pet reach his or her optimum weight.

JUNE - Traveling tips with Fido and Fifi…

  • Carry proof that your pets vaccines are current. Some states require written

proof and some even require a Health Certificate.

  • Securely attach an ID tag to the collar with an emergency phone number
  • Better yet, microchip also!
  • Take two leashes just in case one gets lost.
  • Before you travel, find “pet friendly” lodging.
  • Carry a first aid kit and keep our number handy in case you need to refill a prescription or get advice.

JULY - The heartbreak of heatstroke…

  • NEVER EVER leave your pet in a parked car – heatstroke can be fatal. Signs may include excessive panting

and salivation, anxiety, fast heart rate, weakness, unresponsiveness and eventual collapse. If you see any

of these signs, hose them down, pack towels soaked in cool water around their body and call us immediately.

  • Shade, plenty of water and a child’s wading pool help your pet stay cool during the summer.

AUGUST - The dog days of summer…

  • School will be starting soon. Take that last summer vacation and make sure you’ve called ahead to make boarding

           reservations for your best buddy

  • Asphalt on a hot day can burn the pads of your pet’s feet!
  • Pickup truck beds are another hazard for they become extremely hot and can burn a pet’s feet very quickly

SEPTEMBER - That itchy, scratchy, yucky feeling…

Pets can suffer from allergies too! Dry, itchy skin may be a sign of an allergy from fleas, pollen, foods or even

fabrics and cleaning materials in your house. Bring him in for an evaluation and treatment – oh, what a relief it is!

OCTOBER - What’s eating away at your pet?

  • Nasty intestinal parasites, such as hookworms and roundworms, pose a danger to your pet all year round. Heartworms, spread by mosquitoes, may lead to heart failure and even death in dogs and cats. If your pet isn’t on a 12 month treatment program for these pests, call us!
  • It’s important to treat your pet year-round for fleas and ticks, which can pose potentially serious health risks for your pet and the entire family.
  • Halloween may be fun for the children but it’s not for your pets. Keep them away from the trick or treaters (they can slip out the door) and all the candy that looks/smells so wonderful.

NOVEMBER - Surviving the holidays!

  • If you’re a pet, the holidays can be stressful, just as they are for you.
  • When entertaining, if things get too noisy, place your pet in a quiet place where it is quiet, dark and comfortable
  • Beware of things like tinsel, electric cords, ornament and ribbon. They can cause life threatening intestinal

obstructions or problems with the heart and lungs.

  • Keep those wonderful tasty rich foods away from your pet.

DECEMBER - Turning over a new leaf…

  • Nicotine is poisonous to pets and secondhand smoke increases the chances of oral cavity cancer and Lymphoma.

           Kick the habit!

  • Begin thinking of New Years Resolutions – a yearly visit with Veterinary Services will increase the chances

of your pet living a longer, much better life with the humans he loves – you!
