                                                       Health Calendar

Keep your pet healthy and safe all year round.

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a big difference

in protecting pets and maintaining their health.

JANUARY - Beware of winter hazards!

  • If it’s bitter cold, don’t leave your pet in the car or outside for long periods. A “fur” coat may not be enough!
  • Clean up antifreeze spills right away. Pets are attracted to the sweet taste and

even two licks will cause kidney failure and death if not treated immediately.

  • Just as you wipe your feet when you come in, clean off your pet’s paws too.

Rock salt, ice clumps and rocks can cause discomfort.

  • Watch for wagging tails that may get too close to hot fireplaces and burning candles.

FEBRUARY-  Out with Bad Breath!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Without regular cleaning and treatment, built-up plaque and tarter can damage your pet’s gums and teeth then lead to heart and kidney problems. We routinely give discounts for ultrasonic cleaning and polishing during this month. Call to schedule a routine dental exam, and we can show you how to take care of your pet’s teeth with brushing, special diets, rinses, chew toys and other easy aids

MARCH - Spring spruce-up time!

  • Freshen up! Just as you like to step out in style for spring, how about some pampering for your favorite pal too. Schedule a grooming to trim, clip and wash away the winter grime.
  • Go shopping! Out with the old, dirty outdoor toys and in with some new, clean, fun toys.

APRIL - Chocolate & candy are a pet no no!

Watch out for the sweets…candies made with the artificial sweetener, xylitol, and chocolate can be toxic, even deadly, for your pet. Lock up the sweet stuff and keep some healthy, doggie friendly snacks on hand instead.

MAY - Fitness for life - control your pets' weight!

They may be cute and cuddly, but obese pets have shorter lives (just like humans). Sometimes a significant weight gain can indicate other medical problems. Added weight causes joint, bone, respiratory and heart problems. With the proper diet and exercise, we can help your pet reach his or her optimum weight.

JUNE - Traveling tips with Fido and Fifi…

  • Carry proof that your pets vaccines are current. Some states require written

proof and some even require a Health Certificate.

  • Securely attach an ID tag to the collar with an emergency phone number
  • Better yet, microchip also!
  • Take two leashes just in case one gets lost.
  • Before you travel, find “pet friendly” lodging.
  • Carry a first aid kit and keep our number handy in case you need to refill a prescription or get advice.

JULY - The heartbreak of heatstroke…

  • NEVER EVER leave your pet in a parked car – heatstroke can be fatal. Signs may include excessive panting and salivation, anxiety, fast heart rate, weakness, unresponsiveness and eventual collapse. If you see any of these signs, hose them down, pack towels soaked in cool water around their body and call us immediately.
  • Shade, plenty of water and a child’s wading pool help your pet stay cool during the summer.

AUGUST - The dog days of summer…

  • School will be starting soon. Take that last summer vacation and make sure you’ve called ahead to make boarding reservations for your best buddy
  • Asphalt on a hot day can burn the pads of your pet’s feet!
  • Pickup truck beds are another hazard for they become extremely hot and can burn a pet’s feet very quickly

SEPTEMBER - That itchy, scratchy, yucky feeling…

Pets can suffer from allergies too! Dry, itchy skin may be a sign of an allergy from fleas, pollen, foods or even

fabrics and cleaning materials in your house. Bring him in for an evaluation and treatment – oh, what a relief it!

OCTOBER - What’s eating away at your pet?

  • Nasty intestinal parasites, such as hookworms and roundworms, pose a danger to your pet all year round. Heartworms, spread by mosquitoes, may lead to heart failure and even death in dogs and cats. If your pet isn’t on a 12 month treatment program for these pests, call us!
  • It’s important to treat your pet year-round for fleas and ticks, which can pose potentially serious health risks for your pet and the entire family.
  • Halloween may be fun for the children but it’s not for your pets. Keep them away from the trick or treaters (they can slip out the door) and all the candy that looks/smells so wonderful.

NOVEMBER - Surviving the holidays!

  • If you’re a pet, the holidays can be stressful, just as they are for you.
  • When entertaining, if things get too noisy, place your pet in a quiet place where it is quiet, dark and comfortable
  • Beware of things like tinsel, electric cords, ornament and ribbon. They can cause life threatening intestinal obstructions or problems with the heart and lungs.
  • Keep those wonderful tasty rich foods away from your pet.

DECEMBER - Turning over a new leaf…

  • Nicotine is poisonous to pets and secondhand smoke increases the chances of oral cavity cancer and Lymphoma. Kick the habit!
  • Begin thinking of New Years Resolutions – a yearly visit with Veterinary Services will increase the chances of your pet living a longer, much better life with the humans he loves – you!
